It’s a 37.1 mile trip to the plant in the morning. Luckily, the majority of this is on I-95. I don’t see that many speed traps, but they have been randomly enforcing the 65 MPH zone when I-95 meets I-16. Right before I get to that zone I see a car pulled over on the left side of I-95. When I pass them, I realize that the cop is giving the driver a field sobriety test. I always thought you had to be really unlucky to get a DUI at 7 AM on a Wednesday. Since that’s not the normal hours people would be out drunk driving.

You needn’t of been drinking at or near that time to be intoxicated.

It amazes people when they are caught out just how much alcohol is still in their system from the previous night on the drink.

It’s common to see police doing spot checks around early to late morning after a big occasion say St. Patricks Day or Christmas (well most days around Christmas in fact).

Let’s hope it’s just sleep deprivation/sleep apnea and/or a bad reaction to prescribed medication instead of impairment.

Sure, the driver could still be taken into custody and booked. But I would rather have that on my record than being known for abuse of alcohol and/or drugs.

Most DUI’s, I’ve heard, actually happen in the morning, because people don’t realize they are still drunk because they don’t metabolize alcohol as fast when they sleep.

The drunk driver that hit me (at around 9 am) blew a .21

I can’t abide drunk drivers.

It’s not rocket science, you want to drink, don’t drive. If you need to drive, don’t drink.

I’ve never bought into the crap of, ‘but taxis/uber is too expensive’, ‘it’s only a short drive home’, ‘I’ve never had an accident before’, etc...

I could happily take a baseball bat to their knee caps.

My perception has always been that most of them happen at night/very early morning. People I’ve known with DUIs have usually gotten them around then.

True, or maybe they weren’t impaired. I’m obviously jumping to conclusions, but that’s because I assume if you’re getting a sobriety test you’ve probably done something to earn it.

Fair enough, it just seems that most of the people I’ve known that have gotten DUIs have all gotten them in the evening/early morning.

Yeah, it breaks my brain too but every month or two we have a fatal accident where someone was drunk at 7 or 8AM.

Same here and it could be that it’s not true, I just remember having heard that more than once.

I don’t see getting a DUI as “unlucky”. Choosing to drink & drive isn’t something that just happens . If somebody drives drunk, crashing or getting a DUI should be the expected outcome. It doesn’t become a matter of luck unless the driver somehow manages to pilot the car safely.

I’ve driven a few cars where the steering and suspension were so worn out that it would make look like a drink driver. Naturally this makes me wonder if anyone has ever been pulled over for that reason.

I’ve been driving for rideshare companies over the last few months in between teaching and going to school, and in that shirt time I’ve driven a handful of people to work whose cars wouldn’t start because of an interlock device. Not only have they received multiple DUIs, but they are still attempting to drive drunk...to work.

That’s pretty awful. I guess if you are an alcoholic it is hard to quit.

You would be surprised. My roommate is a sales rep for a beer distributor and he says most of his accounts survive on the morning commuters. He sees, everyday, people in the stores buying shooters or any other small format, plastic bottle liquor they can have in their car/parking lot/desk.

Also being drunk from the night before is a big possibility.

That actually really does surprise me. I guess because I’ve worked at jobs you can’t really do that at, oilfield, chemical plant. It would be easier to get away with it at the plant, but you would eventually get caught.

I think that’s more likely.

I’m assuming (hoping) these people are office drones. You never know though.

Yeah, the last thing I would want is someone drunk playing with 12,000 psi or acrylamide.

We speculated he woke up from a night of partying and decided to drive home for whatever reason

I was up in Greenville partying with a couple friends. We went out Friday night and got pretty intoxicated, we were also playing golf in the morning. Luckily, we had already decided that we were ubering home from golf because we were going to be drinking so we figured we’d uber there. When we got there I cracked my first beer of that morning at about 10 AM, and immediatly felt really drunk, pretty sure I was still really drunk from the night before. Good thing we ubered to golf.

Back when I worked at a “not a fast food” establishment a co worker and I got wasted playing halo all night. Rode with him back to work the next day. Realized I was still pretty drunk once I started working. Luckily it was a dead day and we both got to go home early. He wasn’t still drunk, just super hung over

Yeah, it’s tough. I have empathy for someone suffering from a disease like that, but holy shit you’re going to end up destroying someone else’s life when you kill or maim someone.
